PROGRAMS

The Winnipeg Sport Institute is excited to announce major adjustments to its Preparatory Program plan for 2026-2027.  Central Canada Prep is our premier program that is aimed to maximize the potential of our communities most promising high school and post-grad basketball players.  Central Canada Prep has graduated over 20 athletes at the post-secondary level in the past 4 years and is motivated to continue to help as many athletes reach their potential as possible.

Based on the most recent influence of Basketball Manitoba, the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association and the greater Manitoba basketball community we have made the decision to make a few adjustments in order to maximizing access to high level programming for as many athletes as possible for the 2026-2027 season.

We want to be clear that we will continue to maintain a focus on high level competition, careful skill acquisition, strength and conditioning and character development, Central Canada Prep will continue to deliver an experience that is in the best interest of the greater basketball and sport community.

More specifically, our current plan for high school and post-grad athletes enrolled in our program will use a 2 Phased approach to deliver an elite level program.

PHASE 1

Begins 3rd week of August and ends 1st week of December

Expectations of the program will be the same for high school students and post grad students in this phase of the program.

  • Frequent practices (4-5 times a week)

  • Strength and conditioning (1 time a week – follow-up, individualized strength and conditioning program provided)

  • Local League play (Select Prep League Winnipeg, Manitoba)

  • Tournament play including 3 travel opportunities (1 – Western Canada (Alberta), 1 – Eastern Canada (Ontario), 1 – USA (Las Vegas))

In this phase, High School and Post-Grad athletes will engage in a basketball curriculum that focuses on skill development, individualized strength and conditioning programs, as well as decision making training while implementing team concepts both offensively and defensively to prepare themselves for post-secondary opportunities.  In our program we aim to develop global basketball players who are able to make decisions and defend in a variety of different scenarios.  This approach takes time and attention to details that matter for success in basketball.

PHASE 2

Begins 1st week of December and ends the 1st week of March.

Expectations of the program will defer for high school athletes and post grad athletes in this phase of the program.

Expectations for High School Athletes

High school athletes can opt to fully participate with their respective high school programs.  If high school students opt to participate with their high school programs, it will avoid the pressure families have been feeling with conflicts.  It will also permit high school students to access higher level basketball (in phase 1) as well as enjoy the benefits of the high school experience in Manitoba.  Athletes will be expected to participate in practice once a week to stay connected with the program.

Expectations for Post Grad Athletes

The program will continue with a major emphasis on skill development and strength and conditioning.  Based on enrolment, Central Canada Prep will continue competition with other like-minded programs both in the province of Manitoba and neighbouring provinces.  During this phase, recruitment services will be explored more heavily, and individualized strategies for recruitment will be discussed with the Program Director and the Coaches.

  • Tournament Play to be offered in Manitoba, Alberta and/or Ontario

  • Frequent practices

  • Strength and Conditioning

  • Increased recruitment strategies and placement meetings

After all, we feel this plan considers the best of interest of the sport community in Manitoba and beyond and allows for a healthy, sustainable and fair approach to all involved.
